Oru kayak review article table of contents Read on for my full Oru Inlet kayak review, unsponsored and unfiltered…. So, after 100+ paddling hours and many, many kayaking miles, is this original origami foldable kayak any good? But I really needed a folding kayak that would easily fit in the trunk of my small SUV, and a boat that was light enough to carry by myself from the parking lot to the water. I desperately needed to get outside and back in nature. When I relocated with my family out of New York City to Portland, Oregon during the 2020 height of the pandemic, buying a recreational kayak was top of mind for me. Whatever the case, Oru struck a chord with a lot of us recreational kayakers – our need for a highly portable, lightweight, easy-to-store-and-transport boat, that doesn’t sacrifice on safety or performance. Or perhaps you were deep in a foldable kayak Reddit thread. Or maybe you read their folding kayak feature in National Geographic Magazine’s February 2023 article “The Future is Folded” about how the art of Origami has inspired innovation. You probably saw them on Shark Tank, too. Hope to see other Tucktecs on the water, in my area. Two years ago, I purchased a brand-new Oru Inlet kayak from REI. ![]() More later with photos of Tech hacks as done. My son was also impressed with the set up, and is talking about the possibility of selling his hard shells and buying a couple of Tucktecs for him and his wife. I have been a hard shell kayaker for many years, but they are now getting too difficult for me to hoist up on my roof. So will be adding some techhacks in the next few days, door trim to the edges. I am looking forward to getting her on the water. I am very impressed with the spacious interior, plenty of room for extra dry bags to hold, first aid kit, coffee making items, snacks and paddle jacket In dry bags. Noticed the rubber edge side piece had popped out from one of the rivets, but IĮased it back under the rivet head. I added some interior bungee cords to the side strengtheners, to clip dry bags and paddle leash to prevent any possible loss. Packing up tried stern first, then realized ( from the videos) start at bow work aft. My initial set up was a little difficult because of the newness of the product. I am very impressed with the reinforcements made to the sides and interior bow and stern folds. I only wish I had heard of Tucktec sooner! I'm so happy with this purchase as I have a sense of freedom to explore without having to rely on anyone else. One of the lakes also had many motorized boats, meaning I had to paddle in their wake the kayak still handled well! I did order the stabilizers but haven't used them yet, and the kayak has felt stable every time I've taken it out. I've taken my kayak out onto lakes only so far, and it handled very well. ![]() ![]() The folding and unfolding process is rather easy once you practice. The 8' kayak is plenty spacious for me and my gear! I can sit comfortably with all my stuff and even sit with my legs cross-cross as I paddle! The kayak itself is a marvel - I can venture on my own without having to deal with the difficulties of transporting a typical, heavy kayak that must be strapped to a roof rack. I asked customer service for their advice, and they recommended this option. Thank you tucktec.Īt under 5' tall, I wondered if the 8' kayak would be the better option for me. So far I am very happy with this purchase. I had to keep adjusting the strap for the back of the seat as it stretched throughout my first ride but there is plenty of adjustability in the strap. The seat I got only has one seat cushion and the back, I might add some more cushion at some point. It’s very wide so it’s stable but not the fastest. I didn’t time myself but I have no complaints with the time it takes (took longer to load/unload my old one safely from racks with help). The first time folding is difficult but after folding all of the seams a couple of times it gets much easier. I work in manufacturing so I understand the difficulty with supply-chain issues. With Covid and the crazy world, this isn’t great but it’s to be expected. This gives me the freedom to kayak whenever I please and get back to my favorite pastime! I am a small 5’1, 115 lb woman so when my ex left I found myself very limited since I don’t have roof racks or the physical strength to maneuver my big kayak. ![]()
